In 1913 Ebert succeeded Ferdinand Bebel as Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, and led it until he became President. During his period of office between 1919-1925, he suppressed political threats from the right as well as from the left. For the Nazis he was an object of hatred long after his death in 1925.
